Overview

The Surgical Tech provides assistance and support to surgeons by preparing and providing instruments and equipment during surgical procedures in the Operating Room. Works under the supervision of the surgeon. Facilitates a safe, effective and orderly operating room to maximize patient safety.

This position is eligible for the Northern New Mexico differential of $4.00 per hour. (This differential may be adjusted or discontinued based on business requirements.)

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates effective problem-solving aligned with surgical procedures

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of equipment, supplies, anatomy, and intraoperative medications

  • Adheres strictly to aseptic techniques, PPE protocol, and safety standards during surgical procedures

  • Performs accurate instrument, needle, and sponge counts before and during surgery

  • Prepares sterile field, instruments, and equipment for surgery

  • Assists with patient skin prep, positioning, and monitoring during operations

  • Provides support in the pre-operative phase and performs scrub functions

  • Correctly handles and routes surgical specimens

  • Inspects, assembles, and sterilizes instruments, trays, and specialty equipment

  • Decontaminates and stores GI endoscopes following high-level disinfection protocols

  • Selects proper sterilization methods and ensures sterilization parameters are met

  • Accurately documents all sterilization and QA records per regulatory standards

  • Operates specialized cleaning and sterilization equipment per manufacturer instructions

  • Validates event-related protocols and monitors biological and chemical indicators

  • Restocks, inventories, and distributes instruments across hospital departments and clinics

  • Stays current in field practices through seminars, workshops, and literature

  • Complies with all federal, state, and departmental safety procedures

  • Performs additional responsibilities as required within perioperative support functions

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED required
  • Current BLS required at time of hire
  • Short-term training in operating room setting preferred
  • Previous experience with handling of sterile supplies and/or instruments preferred
  • Working knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique
